Cuddledown’s Origin and Manufacturing Locations

When Cuddledown’s story began back in 1973, they were simply trying to fulfill a need of keeping people warm in the harsh Maine winters so that people could try and lower their heating costs.

They continue to build their comforters and duvet covers by hand in the beautiful coastal town of Yarmouth, Maine. While they have obviously found success in their business, they continue to work towards building the best products by reviewing all materials and products each year to see if there are any areas that could be improved or made more efficient.

Another way they make sure they are providing top-notch products is by having all of their own fill tested by independent labs to guarantee that it holds up to their company’s quality standards that they advertise. Putting their money where their mouth is a great indicator of a company that believes in standing behind its products.

The only thing we don’t like about Cuddledown products is that many of the materials are imported. So while they make excellent products, if you’re looking for comforters made in the USA only, this is not the best option for you. That said, all the sewing and other manufacturing are done in the USA, and they hire many American workers, so they are a company worth supporting, in my opinion.

Cuddledown’s Comforter and Duvet Covet Offerings

Cuddledown offers a wide variety of comforters and duvet covers for you to choose from to fit any bedroom theme as well as your preference of materials.

Their Down Fill Comforters can range from 600 to 1,000 fill options, and all of them are filled with RDS-certified down, which gives you the peace of mind that it is sourced responsibly. These styles are also completed with a box-stitched design that keeps the fill even and keeps you comfortable all night long.

If you prefer a synthetic fill in your comforter, Cuddledown also offers several options that have been keeping customers cozy and rested for many years. They have put all of their experience into building high-quality fibers that are designed to stay spread out evenly throughout the material and not clump together.

If a plain comforter is not what you’re looking for, they also offer several patterned options with the same high-quality down or synthetic-fill options. Some of their most popular styles include the Meridian pattern and the Damask Stripe.

If you are a hot or cold sleeper and need a comforter that can help regulate your temperature to keep you comfortable all night, you might want to try one of their Temperature-Regulating styles. They have put their years in the comforter market to use and have designed a high-tech mesh fabric that builds climate zones around your body and can be a key factor in reducing night sweats.

Holy Lamb Organics

Origin Washington
Materials Used 100% Organic Cotton Outer, Wool Interior, Latex
Sizes Available Crib, Twin, Full-Queen, King
Weights Light, Perfect, Extra

Holy Lamb Organics Origin and Manufacturing Locations

Holy Lamb Organics is a great example of an American with a dream that starts small and continues to blossom. Starting in 2000 with one owner out of his home in Olympia, Washington, the company caught on in their hometown, first growing into a converted school bus, and by 2008 they had purchased what used to be the Little Big General store in Oakville, Washington and they continue to make high-quality comforters there today.

They strive only to use the best natural materials so that they have no reason to add any synthetics or chemical additives. All of their products and processes are designed with the environment at their core.

Most of their wool comes from ranches and farms that they have built strong relationships with within nearby Oregon as well as their home state of Washington. They also source some of their Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified wool from farms in New Zealand.

Holy Lamb Organics Comforter and Duvet Offerings

Holy Lamb Organics will not be the flashiest of comforters that you will see on our list, but they are simple, high-quality, and very eco-friendly. They have learned that simple can be better and strive to only put their name on the absolute best bedding and home products.

Each of their comforters is hand-tufted and then stitched completely around the perimeters to make sure that the wool batting is always in just the right place while you sleep.

They offer two different types of wool selections, including an eco-wool that comes from the West Coast and Organic Wool which is dual-weight and is harvested from farms in New Zealand.

This was one of the few companies that also offered crib-sized comforters. If having organic products with no additives is an important part of your bedding decision for your littles, this would be a great option for you.

Holy Lamb Organics does like to mention that if you haven’t had a true wool product before, it could have a distinct scent when you first get it out of the packaging. This comes from a natural lanolin oil that is left in the wool after harvesting making the fibers in the wool stay fluffy and soft for many years to come.

They have perfected their craft over the years by only using the best materials to get high-quality end products for you to enjoy in your homes. They strive to not only give you a quality product but one that you look forward to using on a daily basis.

Ameridown’s Comforter and Duvet Offerings

With subtle white, blue, and gray color options, any of them would be a great addition to any bedroom decor. Some of their models also have sewn-in duvet corner loop attachments for those who want to add another layer of protection to keep your comforter looking and feeling great for the long run.

The RDS-certified down is sewn into the boxes so that it is always evenly distributed, and the cording along the edges adds a durability factor in areas that tend to take a lot of wear and tear. When a company has continually built great products, they know what details to work on to make sure you are getting the best product for your investment.

They do offer down-alternative options that are hypoallergenic if you prefer that as the fill for your comforter. The Ameridown comforters are also machine washable, which makes for easy maintenance. The only thing I don’t love about this offering is that I couldn’t find any information on where they source their materials. I would love to know if their materials are also sourced from the USA.

Frankenmuth Woolen Mill

Frankenmuth Wollen Mill

Origin Michigan

Sizes Available Lap, Twin, Double, Queen, King, California King
Weights All Season

Frankenmuth Woolen Mill’s Origin and Manufacturing Locations

Since Frankenmuth Woolen Mill’s humble beginnings back in 1894, they have only changed ownership four times, which is absolutely unheard of in today’s society of companies selling out left and right.

What started as creating wool blankets and other products to keep the local farmers and community members warm in the frigid Michigan winters has since become an American icon in the wool product industry.

Throughout this company’s stoic history, they have been contracted by the United States government to make wool socks and mittens for soldiers and have survived through two world wars, a crazy amount of economic ups and downs as well as 22 U.S. Presidents.

Still sitting on its original foundation in its namesake town, the company continues to build on the history of creating quality American Made products while staying up-to-date in today’s product market.

Frankenmuth Woolen Mill’s Comforter and Duvet Offerings

The quality of the wool is the star in this comforter. With its quality of being a natural insulator, it can help keep your body temperature regulated throughout the night, which means a much better night of sleep for you.

With wool being a renewable resource, this is also a great eco-friendly option for a comforter. The sheep on the ranches must be sheared each year for their own health, and using that wool to create great products is a win-win situation for everyone.

Another great characteristic of wool is that it naturally repels dust mites, mildew, mold, and moisture. This can really come in handy as you might want to store your comforter in the warmer months.

Whether you want to use the comforter by itself or pair it with a duvet cover, you will find this comforter to be a great option to add to your bedroom set. With its hand-tied knots about every 9 inches throughout the entire length of the comforter, you can not only feel the American Made a difference, but you can see it every time to lay down.

Lifekind

LifeKind Organic Comforter

Shop Lifekind Website

Origin Sutter County, California
Materials Used Organic Wool, Organic Cotton
Sizes Available Twin, Full-Queen, King
Weights All Season

Lifekind’s Origin and Manufacturing Locations

Lifekind is another example of a company getting its start from an owner that saw a problem and devised a solution for not only themselves but for others for years to come. Starting in 1997, Walt Bader had struggled with finding products that weren’t packed full of chemicals that constantly left him uncomfortable.

With this drive behind him, he has worked to build a company that makes all of its products from natural materials in a way that respects and honors the environment. All of the waste that is created in the manufacturing is biodegradable, and they have put in practices to perform more steps by hand in order to reduce the energy consumption of the company overall.

While some might think this would make employees shy away from joining the cause, it, in fact, has done the opposite. Many of Lifekind’s employees have been with the company for more than ten years, and they are also known for excellent customer service.

Lifekind’s Comforter and Duvet Offerings

If you tend to struggle when comforters or duvets have added chemicals or dyes in them, a purchase from Lifekind will give your body and mind a rest. Knowing that the founder and designer at the company had those same struggles lets you know they totally get it and have worked to fix the problem.

The quilting is hand-stitched and makes sure the organic wool stays where it is supposed to no matter how many times you need to move to find that perfect sleeping spot. It is naturally dust-mite resistant, and if you add the duvet cover for another layer of protection from outside influences, your investment will be solid for years to come.

You will want to read up on the care and instructions as they are not machine washable, but with some regular sunning and airing throughout the life of the comforter, it should stay in top-notch condition.

While the overall design looks simple, there is so much thought and time that has gone into producing these comforters and duvet covers to make sure that everyone, no matter what sensitivities their bodies might have, can get a solid night’s rest.

  1. Kevin I noticed a lot of duvets but I’ve never had one before. Do I need to get the covers for them or can I just use the main blanket?

    Reply
    • Hey Isabela, you don’t technically need a duvet cover but it’s generally recommended because it makes washing and cleaning much easier. It seems that there are more duvets made in the US than traditional comforters.
